MPEG - Moving Picture Experts Group

  • Moving Picture Experts Group
MPEG is a working group of ISO/IEC charged with the development of video and audio encoding standards.
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
    • MPEG-1: Initial MPEG video and audio compression standard, used for Video CD (VCD); includes the popular MEPG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) audio compression format.
    • MPEG-2: Standard for generic video (moving pictures) and associated audio coding, for broadcast-quality television. Used for digital television difusion/distribution, Super VCD (SVCD), and with slight modifications, as the .VOB (Video OBject) files on DVDs. MPEG-2 was the second standard developed by the Moving Pictures Expert Group (MPEG) and is an international standard ISO/IEC 13818, Parts 1 and 2, developed in a joint collaborative team with ITU-T: MPEG-2/System: ISO/IEC 13818-1, ITU-T Recommendation H.222.0; MPEG-2/Video: ISO/IEC 13818-2, ITU-T Recommendation H.262.
    • MPEG-3: Originally designed for HDTV, but abandoned when it was realized that MPEG-2 (with extensions) was sufficient for HDTV.
    • MPEG-4: Expands MPEG-1 to support video/audio "objects", 3D content, low bitrate encoding and Digital Rights Management (DRM). Several new (newer than MPEG-2 Video) higher efficiency video standards are included, notably: MPEG-4 Part 2 (Advanced Simple Profile) and MPEG-4 Part 10 (Advanced Video Coding or H.264). MPEG-4 Part 10 may be used on HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs, along with VC-1 and MPEG-2.
    • MPEG-7: a multimedia content description standard.
    • MPEG-21: a multimedia framework.

MPEG is a working group of ISO/IEC in charge of the development of international standards for compression, decompression, processing, and coded representation of moving pictures, audio and their combination. So far the group has produced:
    • MPEG-1: the standard for storage and retrieval of moving pictures and audio on storage media
    • MPEG-2: the standard for digital television
    • MPEG-4: the standard for multimedia applications
    • MPEG-7: the content representation standard for information search.

DVD Video

DivX ;-) (MPEG-4)

DivX is a video compression technology based on MPEG-4 format. DivX codec is a open standard for MPEG-4 video, very popular worldwide, providing high quality and low bitrate. DivX is often called "the MP3 of video". The original release of the DivX ;-) video compression technology was developed by Jérôme Rota (aka "Gej") in September 1999.

DivX is specially adequated for delivery of full screen, full motion, DVD-quality video over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, video-on-demand (VOD), and home/personal video. The patent-pending DivX video technology offers DVD-quality at 10 times greater compression than DVD MPEG-2 files, enabling full length films to easily fit on a CD or be delivered over broadband connections. MPEG-4 format takes usually only a fraction (around 10-15%) of the size of a standard DVD.
