SGML - Standard Generalized Markup Language

The Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) is the International Standard -- ISO 8879 -- language for structured data and document representation, the basis of HTML and XML and many others. Created by 1974, SGML is a descendant of IBM's Generalized Markup Language (GML), developed in the 1960s.
